TLDR - just roll with it - you'll get it eventually. You'd have much better luck just going torchless from the get-go in terms of finding a Shambler, but not so much from an efficiency standpoint in terms of the standard fights.

Variable of course, and you can't always plan for an altar like you can for some good ole 'finish up and walk back and forward to try your luck', but still. Make sure that you can handle the stress of the fight. front rank crusader, leper or abomination to handle the tentacles as they spawn. I like something that hits the back rank like a shield breaker or plague doctor to kill the shambler. I'd say I encountered a Shambler altar per every 4-5 dungeons on average in my more recent save - sometimes in quick succession, sometimes after a good few weeks, but I recall seeing plenty. Get bandages and antivenom, it is important for champion.

There's not a whole lot to gain from regular farming except more stress or diseases (unless you're being super meta about it), except maybe trinkets or the chance to min-max whatever you have. You have to be able to kill the tentacles pretty much every round, since they constantly buff themselves and you need at least one or two characters to focus-fire Shambler himself. As far as I'm concerned, by the time the dungeon is done (even if it's a short - unless super lucky with the mission), your pack should be relatively if not completely full. Theres basically two things you need as far as Shambler is concerned, IMHO: Front row crowd control, back row damage.
